Plumbing Tips and Tricks

a cleared drain done by our teamWant to know what you can do around the home to keep your plumbing system healthy? There are some easy DIY tips and tricks that can save you money with minimal effort.

Keep your drains clean.

Keeping your drains clean can prevent you from having to call on a plumber to remove a nasty, stubborn drain clog. And by drains, we mean your garbage disposal, too. Practice proper care and maintenance of your drains. It's a good idea to have a simple drain cleaning tool like this drain weasel under your kitchen and bathroom sinks. Every couple of weeks, clean out any hair or residue from your tub and sink drains before the gunk migrates further down your pipes.

Invest in high-efficiency appliances.

You can save a ton of cash each month by upgrading to eco-friendly, water-saving appliances. Look for the WaterSense label when you upgrade your faucets, shower heads, washing machine, water heater, or other plumbing appliances.

Preventative maintenance isn't for chumps.

A lot of our customers think we're trying to fool them when we recommend preventative maintenance plans for their water heater or other big appliances. Actually, it's quite the opposite. For instance, one of our customers recently called us saying that his water heater was acting up, not giving consistent hot water, making odd noises, and the like. When we went to the site, we also noticed water leaking and pooling around the base of the unit. It was clear that this had been an ongoing problem, and there was mold and mildew damage to the baseboards and wall in the area. Had he called us sooner, we would have been able to repair the unit, saving him from the costly water damage repairs.

Perform regular mold and mildew checks.

It's important that you know the signs of a water leak. First, keep an eye on your water bill and water meter. If the meter is spinning when no water in use, it means it detects a leak. Also keep an eye out for signs of mold and mildew in your walls and flooring, since the presence of either is a sign that you have a hidden water leak.
